Abstract
Objective
The aim of this study is to assess the technical feasibility, the clinical and radiological assessment of the interbody fusion with a PEEK cage and local autologous bone graft after anterior cervical discectomy.
Methods
From January 2002 to November 2003, 66 patients with symptomatic degenerative cervical disc disease underwent anterior interbody fusion using PEEK cage and local autologous bone graft. We developed technique of harvesting local autologous bone from operating vertebral body. The average follow-up period was 18.4 months. We analyzed differences between preoperative and postoperative symptoms, height of intervertebral space operated, the degree of lordosis and bone fusion.
Results
Postoperatively, all patients experienced clinical improvement and follow-up cervical X-ray films and CT scans demonstrated interbody fusion. One patient complained of respiratory difficulty just after operation resulting from airway obstru- ction caused by hematoma but recovered after the hematoma removal. Four patients noticed implant subsidence.
Conclusion
This technique provides solid fusion, increased height of interbody space. Because our technique does not require autologous iliac bone graft or allograft, it was simple and short operating time. Moreover, because there was no pain on the donor site, patients could walk earlier. As presented above, anterior interbody fusion with PEEK cage filled with local autologous bone is considered useful in treating degenerative cervical disc disease.
