Abstract
Objctive: Various fusion methods have been introduced for higher fusion rates, structural stability and lower donor site complaints in a single level anterior cervical surgery. However, an optimal fusion method has not been elucidated clearly. This study was performed in order to determine whether the RABEA cage or PCB instrument was a safe and effective fusion device in the treatment of a single level degenerative cervical disease.
Methods: Forty eight patients with a symptomatic cervical degenerative disease were treated with either an anterior cervical interbody fusion with the RABEA cage which had not been filled with bone graft or the PCB instrument and Lubboc bone in a single level surgery. A retrospective analysis for the period of July 2000 through December 2002 was conducted based on clinical and radiologic findings. Thirty five patients received postoperative follow-up care for at least 1 year.
Results: Sixteen(94%) patients of the RABEA cage group and 17(94%) patients of the PCB instrument group showed good or excellent results. The mean preoperative disc height and segmental angle improved after surgery. These figures were maintained during the follow-up observation period for both groups. However, the mean disc height was more decreased in RABEA cage group than in PCB instrument group at 12 months after surgery. The fusion rate was achieved 100% in both groups.
Conclusion: In this study, both groups achieved a similar outcome and fusion rate. Both groups showed improvement in disc height and segmental angle. For this reason, either the RABEA cage or the PCB instrument is a safe and effective fusion device in the treatment of a single level degenerative cervical disease. For a long-term result, extended follow-up observations is required.
