Abstract
In general, the paramedian lumbar disc herniation causes the sciatica on the same side of the disc herniation. If the sciatica is found on the opposite side of the disc herniation, other diseases should be considered and further evaluations are required. If any other disease is there, it is difficult to decide how to treat the patient.
The authors treated 2 patients with sciatica on the opposite side of disc herniation. There were no other pathologic lesion than lumbar disc herniation. We performed bilateral partial laminectomy with neural decompression, on the basis of patient's symptom & radiologic findings. After the operation, patients' condition was improved.
As we had improvement on the patient's symptoms of sciatica contralateral to lumbar disc herniation via surgical operation, we report these cases with a review of the pertinent literature.
