Dear Spine Surgeons and Researchers

We are honored to announce that the first issue of new the spine research journal "Neurospine" has been launched in March 2018. Neurospine is the official journal of ASIA SPINE, the Neurospinal Society of Japan, the Taiwan Neurosurgical Spine Society, and the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society.

In the first issue of Neurospine, we publish spine research articles that includes cutting-edge debate, giving readers recent knowledge and information.

ASIA SPINE is one of the largest spine societies in Asia. Dong Ah Shin MD, PhD discusses the history of ASIA SPINE. The beginning of ASIA SPINE goes back to 1996, with the agreement for organizing a Japan-Korea Conference of Spine Surgery by the leaders from the two countries (Prof. Young Soo Kim and Prof. Nakagawa). From this article, we could enjoy the long history of academic friendship in Asian countries.

Dr. Junseok Bae wrote a review article regarding, “Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery for Adult Spine Deformity”. From this review article, we could understand how MIS surgeons philosophically approach large anatomical structural problems using a small surgical intervention. Readers could enjoy a debate including the pros and cons of MIS deformity surgery.

Dr. Toyohiko Isu reviews, “Superior and Middle Cluneal Nerve Entrapment as a Cause of Lower Back Pain”. As we know, most lower back pain has unidentifiable causes (more than 85%). From this review article, physicians could consider nerve entrapment of the superior and middle cluneal nerves as one identifiable cause of lower back pain.

OPLL is a common spinal disease in East Asian countries. In this issue, Dr. Jau-Ching Wu and Dr. Kazushige Itoki respectively write a review paper and research paper about OPLL. From these two papers, we could understand epidemiological characteristics of OPLL as well as the role of cervical decompressive surgery on general medical diseases such as hypertension.

Dr. Andreea Seicean studied the “Impact of Resident Involvement in Neurosurgery”. This study is based on a database from the “American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program”. Results of this study revealed that residents involvement in neurosurgical cases continued to be associated with a longer surgical duration and slightly higher infection rate. This result is somewhat controversial and triggers the need for more research to find methods to improve the quality of surgical outcomes and resident training simultaneously.

The Aims and Scope of Neurospine are as follows:

Neurospine provides spine clinicians and researchers with peer-reviewed articles on basic and clinical investigation of spine and spinal cord to enhance patient management, education, clinical or experimental research, and professionalism. The journal will consider submissions in areas including, but not limited to, the following: Neuroscience, Bone and mineral research, pathophysiology, risk factors, symptomatology, imaging, treatment, and rehabilitation of spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerve diseases.

Specifically, fundamental science includes the most influential research papers from all fields of science and technology, revolutionizing what physicians and researchers practicing the art of spine surgery worldwide know. Thus, we welcome valuable basic and translational research articles to introduce cutting-edge research of fundamental sciences in clinical spine surgery.

The Neurospine is an open-access journal indexed in PubMed, PubMed Central, EBSCO, and Google Scholar.
