 | | | Dear Spine Surgeons and Researchers, The current issue, which was published in collaboration with the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), highlights research on adult spine deformity. In this SRS/Neurospine special issue on adult spine deformity, we have published review and original articles covering topics ranging from basic principles to surgical techniques to help surgeons and researchers gain a better understanding of diseases affecting spine alignment. | Volume 18(3); Sep 2021 |
| Dr. Samuel K. Cho (New York, USA) presents a review entitled "Emerging Technologies in the Treatment of Adult Spinal Deformity," in which he thoroughly reviews present-day and future technologies for improving surgical outcomes in adult spine deformity surgery. Dr. Alexander F. Haddad (San Francisco, USA) contributes an article, "Incidence of Chronic Periscapular Pain After Adult Thoracolumbar Deformity Correction and Impact on Outcomes," wherein he emphasizes that the upper most instrumented vertebra is strongly associated with chronic interscapular pain. Dr. Mojtaba Kamyab (Tehran, Iran) presents an article entitled "The effect of brace treatment on large curves of 40° to 55° in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis who have avoided surgery: a retrospective cohort study," wherein he argues that brace treatment seems to be effective in controlling further curve progression in AIS patients with curves in the range between 40° and 55°. Dr. Tanvir Johanning Bari (Copenhagen, Denmark) contributes an article entitled "Lordosis Distribution Index in short-segment lumbar spine fusion – can ideal lordosis reduce revision surgery and iatrogenic deformity?" In this article, he emphasizes that lordosis distribution should be considered prior to spinal fusion, especially in patients with high pelvic incidence. Dr. Dong Kyu Chin (Seoul, Korea) presents an article, "Characteristics and risk factors of rod fracture following adult spinal deformity surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis." According to this article, the incidence of rod fracture was 12% after surgery for adult spinal deformity. Advanced age, a higher body mass index, previous spine surgery, and pedicle subtraction osteotomy were significantly associated with an increased risk of rod fracture. Dr. Lawrence G Lenke (New York, USA) contributes an article entitled "The Incidence of Adding-On or Distal Junctional Kyphosis in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Treated by Anterior Spinal Fusion to L3 Was Significantly Higher Than by Posterior Spinal Fusion to L3." In this article, the authors conclude that the prevalence of adding-on or distal junctional kyphosis at the final follow-up for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with the lower instrumented vertebra at L3 was significantly higher in the anterior spinal fusion group. Dr. Eric Otto Klineberg (Sacramento, USA) presents an article, "Ligament Augmentation with Mersilene Tape Reduces the Rates of Proximal Junctional Kyphosis and Failure in Adult Spinal Deformity." In this article, he describes ligament augmentation utilizing polyethylene tape as an effective technique to slow the progression of the proximal junctional angle and lower the risk of proximal junctional disease. Dr. Ibrahim Obeid (Bordeaux, France) contributes an article entitled "Obeid-Coronal Malalignment (O-CM) Classification is Age Related and Independently Associated to Personal Reported Outcome Measurement scores (PROMs) in the Non-fused Spine." The authors conclude that there exists a clear correlation between coronal malalignment and PROMS. Dr. Sung Hyun Noh (Seoul, Korea) presents an article entitled "Modified Global Alignment and Proportion Scoring with Body Mass Index and Bone Mineral Density (GAPB) analysis in Global Alignment and Proportion (GAP) score of each 3 categories for predicting mechanical complications after Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery" In this article, he states that the GAPB system showed an improved ability to predict mechanical complications after surgery for ASD. Dr. Ashwin Sathe (Seoul, Korea) contributes an article entitled "Correlation of paraspinal muscle mass with decompensation of sagittal adult spinal deformity after setting of fatigue post 10-minute walk." In this article, the authors conclude that paraspinal muscle quality in adults with spinal deformity correlates with patients’ ability to maintain an upright posture and sagittal decompensation after walking for 10 minutes. | Yoon Ha, MD, PhD Editor in Chief, Neurospine Wen-Cheng Huang MD, PhD Deputy Editor
