Neurospine Volume 16(4); December 2019 - Table of Contents
Volume 16(4); December 2019 http://www.e-neurospine.org

Dear Spine Surgeons and Researchers,

The current issue (December 2019) of Neurospine presents articles ranging in scope from the past to the future. First, Dr. Daniel J. Hoh and the editorial board members of Neurospine in the US summarize the history of spinal neurosurgery in the US in an article entitled “Brief History of Spinal Neurosurgical Societies in the United States: Part 1.” Through this article, spinal neurosurgeons throughout the world can come to realize the long history of the dedicated, enthusiastic efforts made by spinal neurosurgeons in the US to provide better health care to patients with spinal disorders.

Volume 16(4); Dec 2019

In the December issue, Neurospine highlights the use of state-of-art technology in spine research, with the theme “Artificial Intelligence in Spine Surgery”. First, it contains an invited article from Dr. Samuel K. Cho (New York, USA), entitled “Applications of Machine Learning Using Electronic Medical Records in Spine Surgery.” In this essay, Dr. Cho summarizes recent advances in machine learning in spine surgery, providing an overview of technological advancement of machine learning in spine research. The current issue presents cutting-edge debates on deep learning and machine learning in spine surgery, with topics ranging from medical imaging (Dr. Namkug Kim), spinal oncology (John H. Shin), spinal cord injury (Michael G. Fehlings), adult spinal deformity (Christopher P. Ames), and pediatric spine deformity (Kota Watanabe). Furthermore, Neurospine has invited editorials and letters from world-leading spine surgeons and AI researchers with diverse backgrounds (age, specialty, and nationality). Through the tremendous variety of individual opinions presented in these editorials and letters, we can better understand how different researchers are working in different ways to embrace and fulfill the promise of this new technological revolution.

Dr. Chin-Chu Ko (Taipei, Taiwan) has contributed a review article summarizing the role of acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF) in spinal cord injuries. In this article, Dr. Ko provides evidence that acidic FGF may be a candidate for the clinical treatment of spinal cord injury patients.

Dr. Jacob Yoong-Leong Oh (Singapore) has contributed an article entitled “Is Spinal Surgery Safe for Elderly Patients Aged 80 and Above? Predictors of Mortality and Morbidity in an Asian Population” In this article, Dr. Oh demonstrates that mortality in the elderly population is associated with multiple comorbidities, non-degenerative conditions, and vertebral fractures.
